Subwavelength Spatial Light Modulator powering the Next-Generation of Smart Eyewear

Computer-Generated Holography (CGH) is an emerging display technology that offers unique capabilities, such as reconstructing 3D objects and correcting optical aberrations (including those of the human eye) in software. The capabilities of this technology were known since the 1990s thanks to the pioneering work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Despite a number of commercialization attempts, the potential of this technology has not been fully realized in a consumer product. Within the last decade, the field saw renewed interest thanks to its applications in Augmented Reality (AR) and smart eyewear. The advantages of CGH address numerous issues that Augmented Reality is currently facing. The two bottlenecks that ought to be overcome while introducing a CGH-powered smart eyewear to the market are the lack of sufficiently advanced light modulation technology and high-fidelity hologram generation algorithms that run in real time. Swave Photonics addresses those two challenges by introducing a Holographic Extended Reality (HXR) chipset consisting of a Subwavelength Spatial Light Modulator and its compute companion chip—the Holographic Processing Unit.
