By 2014, Barco introduced the first integrated RGB laser cinema projector. Initially, the adoption of RGB laser projectors in the market was hindered by high costs and stringent laser safety standards, restricting their use primarily to premium cinemas. However, adaptions of safety regulations, advancements in laser diodes and subsequent cost reductions have led to the widespread dominance of RGB laser and laser phosphor projectors in today’s market. Until recently, laser projectors couldn't achieve the contrast ratio and brightness level needed for HDR images on large screens. This changed with Barco's HDR light steering technology introduced in 2024.
