Analyzing the Integration of Traditional Architectural Design Features for Sustainable Modern Housing in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, India

Globalization creates both opportunities and challenges in modern architecture. Western knowledge systems dominate our environment. Technology has struggled to offer sustainable solutions in the face of climate change. The Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) is helping to address the challenges of Globalization. IKS with its wide range of cultural roots, science, philosophy has rich depository of wisdom that can contribute efficiently to the global transformation with regard to sustainable development. The study aim is to explore the integration of traditional architectural design features (ADFs) of traditional houses of study area, IKS and sustainable practices from traditional to modern house design. It also analyses how Indian traditional wisdom can contribute to modern challenges like climate change. This study uses qualitative research methodology which includes plot survey of two hundred and sixty-nine houses, observation method, photographic inventory and discussions with house owners. Users’ responses were conducted to identify the user’s preferences on ADFs which can integrated with Indian knowledge systems (IKS) and Viksit Bharat—2047. The findings of the study is the identification of prominent traditional architectural design features of houses at study area, their significance and integration with IKS to achieve sustainable development from traditional to modern house design. The finding supports a broad understanding of both tradition and modern approaches. The paper concludes, the sustainable architecture is headed meaningful amalgamation of traditional wisdom and future innovations.
