Housing Lean Thinking in Scaled Agile to Enable Large Software Project Success
摘要
Building a house requires a very strong foundation and strong pillars, the same is true when developing a software. The strength of the house is determined by the strength of its foundation. A house cannot stand if it misses one pillar, hence all pillars are equally significant in ensuring a strong basis of the house. The same applies in the Lean Thinking environment, there are pillars and core values that are of utmost important if one wants to deliver a software project successfully. Following the house lean thinking philosophy significantly plays a major role in the success of large software projects. Many firms have embraced the scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) to scale Agile to major software development companies. This is a qualitative study that explores all pillars necessary in enhancing software project success. Agile experts were interviewed to understand all pillars enabling software project success. The results indicate that the four (4) pillars in the SAFe house of lean are not strong enough hence there are still other issues that remain problematic in software project success. The study has revealed that the Lean-Thinking principle has similar pillars with the Scaled Agile Framework house of Lean with an additional of two (2) pillars, the pull and the value stream. These two additional pillars ensures that there is always value that is pulled from the software project being developed. The value stream is also defined as the impact that the software will bring to the customer.
