Brighten Up is an Android application developed to assist visually impaired persons and help them lead an independent life. Technologies such as text recognition, object detection, and face recognition can be utilized so that the users can read any printed materials, for instance, books, newspapers, street signs, etc., identify objects or familiar faces; and communicate with a chatbot to gain personalized assistance. Designed with voice-based navigation, users can control the app without having to look at the screen, thus making it user-friendly for persons with partial and to some extent complete visual impairment. Beyond the visually impaired, Brighten Up is also helpful for older adults and others with visual impairments in overcoming common challenges. The proposed system leverages modern technologies such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), MobileNet, TensorFlow Lite, and Google ML kit making it a practical solution that could benefit visually impaired users by improving their ability to interact with the world. Through accessibility, the app enables users to lead an independent and connected life.
