Opportunities and Challenges of Industry 5.0

This chapter contributes to the understanding of Industry 5.0 by defining key concepts and characteristics of the fifth industrial generation, as interpreted from a range of literature sources. It provides a comparative analysis of Industry 5.0 features in relation to previous industrial revolutions, highlighting the unique advancements and changes introduced by this phase. Key enabling technologies essential to Industry 5.0, such as big data analytics, the Internet of Everything (IoE), collaborative robotics, blockchain, digital twin technology, and emerging 6G systems, are briefly discussed. The chapter also addresses the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating human and robotic collaboration within manufacturing environments and outlines potential research directions aimed at further advancing the implementation of Industry 5.0.
