Seismic Ground Strain by Simultaneous Observation of DAS and Seismometer

In the seismic design of buried pipes, it is essential to successfully evaluate the ground strain caused by seismic waves during an earthquake. Since it is difficult to measure the ground strain, seismic design has assumed sinusoidal waveforms and empirical formulas. It cannot be said that the ground strain due to seismic waves has been correctly evaluated. In this study, DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) was conducted using optical fiber cables along approximately 50 km of National Route 9 in Japan. Several seismometers were also installed along the road and measured simultaneously for 24 h. As a result, the vibration of the optical fiber cable caused by the earthquake was confirmed to be continuous and dense over a wide area, and the propagation of P- and S-waves was also clearly observed. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the strain waveforms and Fourier spectra obtained from the seismographs were well reproduced with those from the DAS.
