Plants, like sessile organisms, must withstand a variety of environmental stressors. Because of increased industrialization and other anthropogenic activities, heavy metal pollution from heavy metals like cadmium, arsenic, and lead is the greatest abiotic stress for plants in the contemporary scenario, posing a substantial risk to animal and human health. There is a high demand for less harmful metal deposition in plant-based foods. Plant hormones are essential to cope with biotic and abiotic stress in plants. Among all the hormones, jasmonic acid (JA) and jasmonates (JAs), which act as its precursors and derivatives, play an essential role in mediating plant responses and defense against biotic and abiotic stress and have attracted much attention in research. Although there are several reviews on JA, this review is based on the regulation of JA in plants against stress and synthesis of jasmonic acid, metabolic regulation, and signaling. We review current developments in understanding the roles and processes of JAs in plant responses to abiotic stimuli like heavy metals, salt, drought, cold, and heat, as well as biotic stresses. This chapter will cover the physiological and molecular approaches of jasmonic acid and jasmonate derivatives (JAs) under heavy metal stress. Finally, we highlight present difficulties and potential in JA research in plant stress responses.
