ABA-Mediated Regulation of Plant Biology Under Heavy Metal Stress: Physiological and Molecular Aspects

Anthropogenic activities have historically allowed heavy metals like Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd, Zn, Hg, and As to accumulate in the soil. Even while a number of these metals, such as Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Zn, are necessary for a healthy plant’s mechanism, excessive exposure to them leads to symptoms including stunted development, chlorosis, browning of the roots, decline, and death. Abscisic acid (ABA), a plant hormone, is engaged in a variety of physical, physiological, and biological processes, including seed dormancy induction, stomatal regulation, and response to various biotic and abiotic stresses. In the literature, the exceptional effect of exogenous application of ABA in controlling stress effect in plants is available; however, there is a need to shed light on ABA’s role in heavy metal metabolism. In this chapter, we are going to discuss how ABA is important in reducing HM stress in plants. Furthermore, to identify the various underlying biochemical factors involved in the interaction between ABA and HM stress.
