Actually, heavy metals cause major problems in terms of the contamination of the environment (soil, air, and water), as well as humans, animals, and plants. They have two main sources: the natural origin and the ever-increasing anthropological activities. Particularly, plants are affected by those toxic contaminants at various levels, starting with the cells, organs, metabolism, and physiological processes like photosynthesis, plant water balance, nutrient accumulation, gaseous exchanges, enzymatic activities, growth regulation, plant water balance, and reproduction. Purposely, various processes are involved in the interaction of plants, heavy metals, and the environment, including toxicity, uptake, sequestration, detoxification, tolerance, and hyperaccumulation. The main objective of this review is to deal with the impact of heavy metals on plant biology, discuss, and explain a number of advances, and the various processes involved.
