Heavy metal (HM) stress is one of the main abiotic stresses that affect biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes in plants, hence reducing the plant’s production potential and yield. Globally, agricultural crops are at risk due to heavy metal stress. Because HM toxicity disrupts cellular ionic equilibrium, cell membrane integrity, metabolic balance, and enzymatic activities, it has a negative impact on the development and physiological processes of plants and their yield. Scientists are employing helpful techniques to guarantee food security in response to abiotic stresses and the growing global population. It has long been thought that using organic compounds might increase resistance to abiotic stresses. Under heavy metal stress, plants naturally generate defence mechanisms against their adversities by using phytohormones. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in controlling the harmful consequences of heavy metal stress by the exogenous administration of phytohormones. Such signalling transduction compounds, i.e. phytohormones, help plants grow and develop while reducing the toxicity of heavy metals.
