This chapter argues for distributed, decentralized, and decolonial approaches to environmental conservation. It critiques dominant, top-down paradigms rooted in colonialism and technocracy, and centers Indigenous knowledge systems, such as Maaori frameworks like kaitiakitanga and maramataka. Through the Design for Conservation (D4C) methodology, the chapter advocates for participatory processes that foster collaboration, cultural plurality, and respectful engagement with nature. By positioning nature as a stakeholder and embracing pluriversal thinking, D4C supports community-led, context-specific conservation. Ultimately, it calls for deep relational shifts toward humility, reciprocity, and shared stewardship of the planet’s futures.
