Utilization of Locally Sourced Ilmenite and Gypsum from Sri Lanka as Oxygen Carriers for Chemical-Looping Combustion
摘要
Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising technology for clean and efficient fuel combustion with inherent CO2 capture. This study investigates CLC fuelled with coal using various Sri Lankan materials as oxygen carriers, specifically Ilmenite, and Gypsum. The effects of temperature and fuel-to-oxygen carrier ratio on coal conversion and combustion efficiency were assessed. A thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), simulating CLC by exposing the samples to alternating oxidizing and reducing conditions, was used to evaluate oxygen transfer capacity (OTC) and reactivity rates. Experimental tests were conducted at temperatures ranging from 850 ℃ to 950 ℃. Results indicated that Gypsum exhibited a higher OTC of approximately 0.54 under optimal conditions, while Ilmenite showed a lower OTC of 0.08. The performance of both Ilmenite and Gypsum was temperature and weight fraction-dependent. Optimal reactivity for Ilmenite and Gypsum was observed at 900 ℃ with 90% OC. These findings suggest that both Sri Lankan Ilmenite and Gypsum show promise as efficient and durable oxygen carriers for CLC applications, offering a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to synthetic carriers. Further research is recommended to optimize material performance and assess scalability for industrial use.
