Drone-Based Mapping of Ground Cracks of Land Subsidence Area in Joshimath, Uttarakhand

Drone technology has improved the accuracy and has facilitated in decision making processes for any geohazards monitoring and risk reduction. This study was carried out in Joshimath Land Subsidence area in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. This place is affected by various natural hazards owing to complex geological structure. A quadcopter drone was used for capturing orthoimages of the study area and in the post processing stage orthomosaic of the area are produced. Further these outputs are analyzed in ArcGIS. Ground cracks on the hill slope terraces are detected on the orthomosaic image and digitized. Ground cracks on hill terraces and roads are clearly visible and mapped to identify the crack and movement pattern. The pattern of ground cracks and damage patterns in buildings are correlated. It is observed that there is a strong positive correlation between the ground distress and the distress in buildings. From this, it could be established from such correlation that Manohar Bagh, Singhdhar, and Jaypee Colony areas are worst affected by this land subsidence. Such type of drone-based mapping is quite helpful for micro-zonation of landslides/land subsidence areas in the post-disaster scenario.
