Dalbergia latifolia Roxb., commonly known as Indian rosewood, is a premium hardwood regarded for its exceptional qualities. The wood has global recognition for its use in luxury furniture, musical instruments and other wood products. The high demand for this wood is due to its superior strength, durability and aesthetic appeal. This chapter presents the quality attributes of rosewood in terms of its physical and mechanical properties, seasoning behaviour, durability, working qualities and end applications. Sapwood is perishable, while heartwood is highly durable. The wood is heavy, with a specific gravity ranging from 0.70 to 1.02 in air-dried condition. It is dimensionally stable due to its lower volumetric shrinkage. The weight, shock-resisting ability, shear and surface hardness of D. latifolia are superior to teak, while the other indices are marginally lower in comparison. The timber dries slowly, but with little degradation. Kiln seasoning enhances the value of the timber by darkening the colour. The wood is rather difficult to work with by hand because of its higher density and interlocked grains, but it is easier to work with machines. The wood can be turned, glued, screwed, and polished with excellent results. Its suitability indices highlight its excellent performance in structural and decorative applications, making it a preferred choice for high-end woodworking.
