Pollination Ecology and Breeding System in Dalbergia sissoo

Dalbergia sissoo has a two-month flowering season, with peak flowering lasting a fortnight. Anthesis, anther dehiscence, stigma receptivity, and pollinator activity follow a synchronized diurnal rhythm. Pollination occurs through honey bees, beetles, butterflies, and thrips. The flowers are predominantly cross-pollinated producing almost 40 per cent pod set. Pod dispersal is efficient and facilitated by wind, birds, and water. Flower and immature fruit abortion and sibling rivalry within pods are common. The entire process from bud initiation to the formation of a mature seed takes almost eight months.
