Dalbergia latifolia Roxb. is a premium-quality, high-priced timber species that is gradually depleting in Indian forests. Non-sustainable exploitation of the species left its natural population dwindling and vulnerable (VU), as per the IUCN record. Despite its high market value, its occurrence is sporadic in natural forests in central India. It’s not a preferred species of the forest department due to slow growth habit; thus, it is left with ‘rare’ monoculture plantations. Due to the declining population, attention has been paid to conserving and multiplying its superior genotypes. Raising its improved planting material for various afforestation programmes is a sustainable solution for ecological security and enrichment of population density towards forest productivity. However, the recalcitrant nature of vegetative propagation categorised it as a ‘difficult-to-root’ species, resulting in a lack of quality plant production from known superior germplasm. Continuous efforts during the last 15 years resulted in enhanced adventitious rooting through juvenile shoot cuttings from hedged germplasm of selected superior trees. Juvenile shoot cuttings were successfully rooted after basal dip treatment of Indole-3 Acetic Acid (IAA) in combination with Boric Acid and planted in the substratum of soil: sand: FYM in polybags under partial sunlight and ambient humidity in the shade net house. Arrest of reproductive growth by annual hedging of selected germplasm enhances the rooting ability of juvenile shoots. Three-month rooted plants that were field-planted exhibited superior growth over the seedlings in terms of height, number of primary branches, and foliar diameter during the initial years of establishment; thus, higher biomass/productivity for more economic return in a short period is expected from plantations of quality planting material developed through juvenile shoot cuttings.
