In today’s digital age, the authenticity and trustworthiness of images play a pivotal role in a multitude of domains, ranging from journalism and law enforcement to art authentication and social media content validation. The increasing accessibility of image editing tools and the widespread prevalence of manipulated visual content have underscored the urgency of developing robust techniques for image manipulation detection. It can be quite difficult to detect whether or not a digital image has been altered from its original form. Finding signs of tampering in a digital image is a difficult undertaking to complete. This survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art methods for detecting image manipulation, including contrast enhancement detection, the major image tampering detection methods using copy-move, splicing, retouching and others. Also, the advances in the field of image manipulation detection. A comparison of all the methods reveals the most effective strategy for further research.
