Early Childhood Matters
摘要
This chapter explores the critical importance of Early Childhood Development (ECD) as the foundation for lifelong learning, emotional well-being, and overall human development. ECD encompasses a holistic set of interventions—ranging from health, nutrition, responsive caregiving, early learning, and infant stimulation amongst others. These inputs, when provided during the early years, yield profound and long-lasting benefits for individuals, families, and societies. Drawing on insights from neuroscience, the chapter highlights how early brain development is shaped by nurturing experiences, setting the trajectory for cognitive growth, executive functions, and emotional resilience. In addition to the biological imperative, the chapter outlines compelling economic and social arguments for investing in ECD, demonstrating that early investments lead to higher returns, compared to remedial interventions later in life. The chapter also situates ECD within the Indian policy context, reviewing major initiatives such as the revamp of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the foundational stage of learning. Finally, the role of ECD in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing social inequities is discussed, emphasizing that early childhood is not just a private concern but a national and a global priority with transformative potential.
