The Wei (also called “Cao Wei”), Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties period began in the year 220 with Cao Pi seizing the throne from Emperor Xiandi of Han and ended in 589 with Emperor Wendi of Sui (581–618) overthrowing the Chen Dynasty (557–589). During this time, China was politically divided, successively traversing the Three Kingdoms period (220–280), the short-lived Western Jin Dynasty (266–316), the period of coexistence of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420) and the Sixteen Kingdoms (304–439) following the Yongjia Southward Migration, and the Northern and Southern Dynasties period (420–589).
