Computer-Based Wearable Devices for Remote Patient Monitoring

Abstract: Wearable devices in the modern world have opened up innovative and much reliable techniques of healthcare monitoring for people of all ages. Although at its initial stages, modern point-of-care (POC) wearable devices have witnessed tremendous transformative changes form bulky wired hand-held monitoring devices to wireless skin conformable or even tattooed devices for continuous measurement of various biophysical and biochemical signatures of the body. These advancements coupled with real time continuous data monitoring as well as transmission of clinically relevant data to remote doctors using simple mobile phones/fitness trackers or even body worn antennas, is felicitating proper and timely diagnosis leading to widespread acceptance of these products as well as the wearable computing technology. Present chapter attempts to highlight these developments with emphasis upon various computing modalities like flexible antennas, smartphones, NFCs, WBANs, etc. along with the need and issues in powering up these wearable devices with use of energy harvesters as potential solutions. Thereafter, various potential applications of wearable devices in healthcare sector have been discussed with emphasis on detection of various biophysical and biochemical parameters, disease biomarkers, sleep monitoring, etc. Finally, the chapter also highlights the use of AI and ML in enhancing wearable sensing with a concluding remark on future scope of wearable devices in remote patient monitoring systems to make healthcare treatments more personalized as well as cost effective.
