Phytochemical Profile, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Potential of the Extract of Various Curcuma spp. from Manipur

The genus Curcuma L., which belongs to the Zingziberaceae family, comprises perennial herbaceous plants and is thought to have originated in Indo-Malayan region and has a widespread occurrence in Asian subcontinent. Turmeric has played a vital role in food preservation, natural colourant in food industries, and has pharmaceutical importance. Curcuminoids have been shown to exhibit medicinal properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, and antibacterial properties. The proposed study was carried out to screen and analyze the biochemical contents of Curcuma spp. collected from 12 different districts of Manipur. Preliminary screening of the phytochemicals from the ethanolic extracts revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds, including phenols, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and carbohydrates. The quantitative analysis of major secondary metabolites was determined spectrophotometrically. The antioxidant potential of the ethanolic plant extracts was estimated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and 2, 2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothianzoline sulphonic acid (ABTS) analyses. Quantitative analysis of secondary metabolites from various Curcuma spp. indicated Curcuma longa Lakadong variety turmeric having the highest in most major secondary metabolite contents. The reducing ability of C. longa Lakadong was found to be the highest among the species. The antibacterial test was performed by agar well diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. C. longa Lakadong (LAK) was found to be a potent growth inhibitor against both Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacterial strains, whereas Curcuma leucorrhiza concentrations ranging from 50, 100, and 150 mg/ml showed the minimum zone of inhibition in E. coli. These results underline its promising potential for applications in the pharmaceutical and food sectors.
