Recent systematic reviews have demonstrated that shoulder joint (SJ) complaints may be associated with occupational risk factors. These include working with the hand at or above SJ level, repetitive SJ movements, and force applied to the SJ. Therefore, it is essential to identify these risk factors through appropriate risk assessments and then evaluate them individually and, if necessary, in combination. As few studies to date have presented measurement-based objective assessment approaches, a comprehensive approach to shoulder loading assessment was derived and developed from the literature. The assessment methods have been derived from occupational physiological and biomechanical findings and related studies with measurement-based exposure assessment. The proposed shoulder workload assessment approach addresses relevant physical risk factors based on continuous and accurate measurements. It allows for the assessment of individual situations, entire activities, or whole shifts.
