The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the health and work conditions of people with sickle cell disease (SCD). This is a qualitative, exploratory study, covering workers with SCD and users of basic health units in Recôncavo da Bahia-Brazil. The interviews were transcribed and transformed into textual corpus for analysis using the IRAMUTEQ Software (word cloud and similarity analysis). The data were subjected to Bardin’s content analysis following the following phases: Organization of analysis, coordination, categorization, treatment of results, inference and interpretation of results. A strong relationship was observed between the fear of contamination and the care strategies adopted, taking into account that people with SCD can develop severe progression of the disease. The results of the similarity analysis showed that the experiences of illness, perceptions, feelings and survival strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic compromised quality of life and health. The ability to work was affected and there were difficulties in the work routine due to the fear of complications related to contamination by the virus. Inequalities and barriers to the working life of people with SCD were highlighted, as well as the need for care, control and balance strategies to maintain quality of life and productive capacity.
