Profound developments took place in civilized societies in East Asia, Central Asia, East Europe and North Africa. The Ottomans seized the opportunity of the decline of the Byzantine Empire to expand their territories in Asia Minor, and eventually built an empire extending from Asia to Africa and Europe. West Europe also saw the emergence of several great powers. The world arena began to witness spectacular storms of change.
