Beyond Borders: Exploring Moroccan Fulbright FLTA Alumni’s Journey of Educational Discovery and Transformation
摘要
The internationalization of higher education is a phenomenon that has sparked a lot of debate on its implementation, given the diverse educational contexts that challenge students’ and actuators’ academic and professional growth. Actors from the public and private sectors in Moroccan higher education are well aware of its impact on the future of Moroccan students, who should be well prepared for a highly globalized world. In this respect, the current research explores the transformative journey of Moroccan participants in the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) scholarship, focusing on their motivations, experiences, and outcomes. A qualitative research design helped collect data thanks to 16 semi-structured interviews conducted with Moroccan participants. A thematic analysis brought a deeper understanding of the multifaceted motivations driving individuals to take part in the FLTA program, revealing a convergence of professional aspirations, cultural exchange interests, and personal growth objectives. The research also tried to provide answers to three main research questions: (i) What is the impact of the Fulbright FLTA program on Moroccan FLTA participants’ personal, academic, and professional development? (ii) What are the main challenges that participants had to deal with throughout the FLTA experience, and what were the coping strategies adopted to overcome those challenges? (iii) What are the lasting effects of the FLTA experience on Moroccan participants? Through in-depth narratives, participants articulated their desires to enhance teaching skills, foster cross-cultural understanding, seek new experiences, and serve as cultural ambassadors for their countries. Regardless of some challenges encountered, participants reported their perception of cultural awareness and personal growth, with new horizons being opened.
