Prevalence and Associated Factors of Overweight and Obesity Among Younger Adult Diabetes Mellitus Patient—A Cross Sectional Study
摘要
Obesity and overweight are commonly associated with diabetes mellitus in younger adults and have emerged as a significant global health concern. In diabetes mellitus, the human body exhibits insufficient insulin hormone levels to regulate blood sugar levels. The study objectives were to determine the prevalence rates and establish a correlation between specific risk factors and obesity/overweight. The study was conducted at the Tertiary Care Hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Using the Consecutive Sampling technique, 384 diabetic patients were administered a semi-structured questionnaire. The prevalence of obesity and overweight was found to be 23.7 and 18.7% (163 out of 384). Several factors are significantly associated with obesity and overweight including age, duration of diabetic diagnosis, family history of diabetes, consumption of junk food, planned exercise, lifestyle, alcohol, and smoking. The study emphasizes the present need for targeted interventions focusing on modifiable risk factors to manage/prevent obesity and overweight among diabetes patients.
