This chapter explores the possibilities and affordances of dance in relation to poetic form. It starts with a consideration of the nature, similarities and differences between dance and poetry as modes of communication and meta-genres respectively. It then moves on to look at a number of aspects of correspondence: spacialization; the dance phrase and line phrase; free verse; pas de deux and dialogic forms of poetry; the ground; drafting, re-writing and transcription; dance on film and issues of choreography, prosody and poetics. The core of this chapter is an emphasis on form and formal correspondences between the two arts of dance and poetry. Such an emphasis is the aim of the book, so that rather than depend on metaphorical connections like ‘the poetic nature of dance’ or the ‘dance-like movements in poetry’, the argument is based on more concrete as well as theoretical levels, asking questions like ‘To what degree are the two art forms similar?’ and ‘Might there be a vocabulary we can use from dance to shed further light on the processes of composition in poetry and with regard to poetic forms themselves?’. Such explorations are where the originality of the approach is made evident, though contextual issues like the socio-political nature of dance and poetry are always in mind.
