Advances in hardware and economies of scale have made it possible for edge computingEdge computing devices to be embedded in everyday consumer products to process large volumes of data quickly and produce results in near real time. Edge computingEdge computing enables service providers to analyze customer preferences, behaviors, etc., without breaching personal privacy regulations. The ostensible reason that service providers gather troves of consumer data is to better understand customers and to improve customer satisfaction and safety. The information may also provide insights for new and enhanced services and products. As edge computingEdge computing devices have proliferated, at least four important categories of the framework have emerged: edge computingEdge computing on mobile devices, fog computingFog computing, cloudletsCloudlet, and mobile edge computing networksMobile edge computing network. Definitions of these categories, their differences and individual strengths will be discussed. Examples of products and services suited to each category will also be given.
