Women’s Reproductive Mental Health in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has made significant progress in reducing maternal and child mortality. However, maternal mental health care lags compared to physical health morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of mental disorders among females is higher than among males in Bangladesh. It affects every phase of the reproductive age of females. Studies mostly assessed depression, anxiety, stress, and common mental health disorders in pregnancy, postpartum, infertility, abortion, and menopause. The country’s existing health system needs additional attention to a functional liaison between maternal and mental health professionals. In the current chapter, we highlight the epidemiology and burden of mental disorders, including substance abuse and suicidal behavior, during different phases of women’s lives, the current status of services, and liaison between maternal and mental health services providers, country-specific challenges, programs, and policies, current challenges in reproductive mental health and ways out.
