Describing reproductive mental health is a challenge in a country like Afghanistan, where systemic barriers exist restricting access of women to even basic public spaces. There is barely any epidemiological data in this domain. Service availability and policy provisions are scant, and data on the utilization of services is mostly unavailable. However, even in the face of these restrictions and challenges, many have found a way to conduct some research in this area. This chapter presents a summary of the available research and data that have been published. It has sections on perinatal mental health, mental health during menarche and menopause, psychological issues associated with reproductive interventions, suicide and substance use, psychosocial indices (gender-based violence and gender inequality), service availability and utilization, policies and programs, research gap, country-specific challenges, and the way forward.
