Sexuality in Perinatal Period
摘要
The perinatal period entails significant biological, psychological, and relational shifts, yet sexuality during this time remains an overlooked domain, particularly in South Asia. Cultural taboos, religious norms, and limited healthcare discussions contribute to the persistent neglect of perinatal sexual health. This chapter examines normative changes in sexual function across pregnancy and postpartum, the prevalence of perinatal sexual dysfunction, and the psychological impacts of events such as medical termination of pregnancy, pregnancy loss, and high-risk childbirth. South Asian sociocultural constructs, including family dynamics and stigma, exacerbate barriers to open dialogue and intervention. Current gaps in perinatal education, mental health support, and clinical assessment tools are identified. The chapter advocates for culturally sensitive psychoeducation, early assessment, and integrative care models to address perinatal sexuality, improve maternal mental health, and strengthen couple intimacy during the transition to parenthood.
