Sustainable Coconut By-product Management Using Machine Learning

By-products such as coconut oil, coir, desiccated coconut, and activated carbon can be cultivated from coconuts. However, full profitability of these products against sustainable use is still a challenge owing to the market prices that keep changing, costs of processing, and the variation in seasonal yields. This project proposes a framework based on machine learning with the objective of maximizing the profitability of the coconut by-products using historic data and seasonality patterns along with market data and production expenses. We leverage ensemble machine learning techniques like XGBoost, CatBoost, random forest, and gradient boosting within the framework to maximize the predictive potential while mitigating overfitting for stable decision-making. Ensembling methodology combines forecasting abilities of various models, reducing the impact of oscillation and outliers on forecasting while providing better forecast stability. This enables stakeholders to dynamically adjust production strategies according to fluctuating economic conditions, maximizing returns. Sustainability is the large focus of this project to ensure that coconut resources are used to their fullest potential and not wasted or being detrimental to the environment. By applying machine learning to agricultural decision-making, the model helps farmers and processing facilities determine which most profitable by-products to produce in any given period to optimize resource allocation and minimize losses. Besides its economic benefits, the project influences policymaking, supply chain management, and agribusiness innovation. It enables producers to align the production schedule with the demand in the market, preventing overproduction of low-valued items, which enhances the operational efficiency. By leveraging machine learning for data-driven forecasting, this initiative empowers coconut farmers, agribusiness, and policymakers to decode dynamic market forces, increase production efficiency, and enhance financial sustainability. The convergence of artificial intelligence, economic forecasting, and sustainable resource management makes this framework a game changer for driving the coconut industry toward a more profitable, environment-conscious future.
