Ageing, Social Structure, and Communication
摘要
It is important to study the socio-economic profile and status of ageing population and their media access. Advancement of economic development and the resulting changes in family structure and relationships, the aged people in the current scenario are facing many challenges ranging from economic dependence to retirement and ill health. Maintaining significant social relationships is an essential element of healthy ageing amidst hindrances such as geographical distance to children, reduced mobility, or other obligations. In such circumstances, new media can come to the aid and help in overcoming these barriers as online social networking sites can be used to engage in strong social contact irrespective of geographical location or time. This chapter maps the social structure as well as communication infrastructure in the daily lives of older adults through field data.
