People living with the contested chronic illnesses Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Long COVID experience prejudice, dismissal and denial of their lived realities, due in part to their illnesses currently having no ‘objective’ biomarkers. This leads to contestations between embodied knowledges versus biomedical perspectives, with the latter historically placing ME/CFS within a psychological paradigm. Drawing on interviews with 20 Australian clinicians, researchers and advocates involved in ME/CFS and Long COVID knowledge production, this chapter examines how knowledge of contested chronic illnesses is socially produced. The research demonstrates both the shifting influence of lived experience as a credible form of expertise in shaping biomedical knowledges and the need to incorporate embodied perspectives in knowledge production to ensure better outcomes for those living with the conditions.

摘要
