In Australia and many parts of the world, it is challenging to care for a loved one suffering with the pain, nausea, stigma, grief, loneliness, financial pressures and other social and medical issues associated with Long COVID. My personal essay seeks to increase understanding of the difficulties carers face when looking after their loved ones with Long COVID. I draw on memories of caring for my wife, Gemma Carey, and our young son, while she had Long COVID, and in the months after her unexpected death. I write from my memories using literary techniques associated with ‘weird fiction’, but in a nonfiction format, to try and better expresses coexisting feelings of ‘beauty’ and ‘horror’ that I encountered when caring for my family. I also attempt to honour and celebrate the memory of my wife, who was a highly accomplished academic and author, tireless fighter for the health and rights of people seemingly forgotten by society, and who dearly loved those close to her.
