‘I Have Disappeared’: Long COVID, ME/CFS and Inclusion in Church Communities
摘要
This chapter explores the experience of inclusion and belonging within Church of England communities for individuals of working age living with invisible illnesses and chronic conditions, focusing on Long COVID and ME/CFS. Sixty-one people were surveyed online, thirteen of whom were also interviewed to explore the complexity, dynamics and nuances of their lived experience. Using reflexive thematic analysis, eight themes were developed from the qualitative data, five of which were negative and three were positive. These findings suggest that there are opportunities to improve inclusion for those with invisible illnesses in the Church of England, by moving closer to the church’s stated ideals and away from cultures of ableism, individualism and indifference.
