In this chapter, through an autoethnographic account, I argue that Long COVID entails a multilayered traumatic abandonment, entailing bodily incapacitation, medical neglect and psychologisation and social isolation as well as political neglect. Hence, rather than having the existential effects of their physical illness alleviated through shared social, medical and political holding spaces, wherein the severity of suffering and disease can be recognised, patients are instead faced with denial, indifference and even aggression that compounds the traumatic burden of their physical illness. Importantly, I regard such traumatisation not as a psychological disorder, but instead, adopting a critical theoretical approach, as traumatic status subordination. Traumatic status subordination entails a fundamental betrayal of the counterfactual presupposition of being treated as an equal human being. As the counterfactual presupposition of equal worth as a human being is severely damaged, the lifeworld crumbles, leading to traumatic alienation.
