Moving Beyond Deficit: DisCrit and Disability Justice in STEM Postsecondary Education

This chapter focuses on DisCrit and Disability Justice as intersectional lenses to understanding oppression and liberation in STEM education. We introduce these two critical frameworks and provide our own synthesis of their theoretical tenets. We then use these frameworks to analyze the case Payan v Los Angeles Community College District, which offers a poignant example of the intersections of ableism and racism in higher education. Using this case as an example, we discuss broader takeaways for STEM and STEM education.
