QuantCrit as a Methodological Framework for Equity-Centered Discipline-Based Education Research
摘要
If Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) aims to address educational inequity, our research requires research lenses rooted on solidarity and liberation. That is, research lenses aligned with subverting harmful narratives and emphasizing patterns of marginalization and minoritization. The goal should be to build an educational system capable of setting up students for success and so their identities are reflected on the practice of science. The main objective of this chapter is to provide a quantitative methodological framework utilizing a critical lens for Discipline-Based Education Researchers focused on QuantCrit. It uses a Critical lens to guide DBER researchers in applying critical quantitative principles and evaluating their decisions throughout the research process. QuantCrit involves constant engagement in reflexivity, improvement, and adaptation, as research is a nonlinear process. The framework serves as a blueprint to guide DBER researchers in establishing research questions, choosing theoretical frameworks, experimental design, and supporting analytical decisions. The chapter illustrates the utility of QuantCrit in three sections. Firstly, the chapter provides historical context around the development of statistical methods used today and how they are at odds with equity and justice goals. Secondly, it discusses QuantCrit as a methodological framework and its theoretical tenets. Finally, the chapter illustrates how to apply QuantCrit tenets throughout the research process. By adopting QuantCrit, DBER can better promote educational equity and justice for marginalized students.
