Critical Race Theory with Applications to DBER
摘要
Critical Race Theory (CRT) is designed to identify and improve the dynamics between race, racism, and power in US society. Since its foundation in legal studies in1989, it has expanded into many fields including DBER. This chapter will begin by providing some brief historical context that led to the foundation of CRT. Then I will cover the major tenets along with some other major themes of CRT, all while providing context relating back to STEM. Next, some direct applications of CRT to qualitative and quantitative research methods will be discussed briefly, with references for the curious reader. Finally, I will articulate how CRT has become a politically divisive topic then briefly rebut some common scholarly critiques. This chapter is designed to provide you with an introduction to CRT, while providing resources for those who wish to learn more.
