An overview to illustrate how to provide comprehensive guidance for preventive health and maintenance after spinal disorders for primary healthcare providers, caregivers, and patients. It is a known truth that people with spinal diseases do not have access to the same level of preventive treatment as people in general. Furthermore, secondary disorders associated with spinal dysfunction may further jeopardise their health. It is thought that spinal disorders are complicated conditions with numerous obstacles to receiving appropriate primary care. In addition to enhancing health and quality of life, basic preventive care and attention to the special health needs of individuals with spinal diseases may help reduce unnecessary medical treatment. Primary healthcare practitioners are skilled in preventative and maintenance treatment; however, due to several obstacles, patients with spinal problems cannot receive the same level of preventive care. Prevention of further damage to neural structures which would precipitate the signs and symptoms of degenerative spinal disorders as well as traumatic spine keeping the quality of life in view is under this preview. To ensure evidence-based general preventive care, the following measures are recommended: One should assess and address common secondary health concerns, such as gastrointestinal, autonomic dysfunction, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory, sexual and reproductive, skin integrity, mental health, pain, and spasticity, in a preventive manner. This chapter outlines the requirements for preventive healthcare, including the variations unique to the care of people with spinal problems and particular care to take when conducting examinations (e.g. accessibility, physical concerns, and planning) (Milligan et al., Top Spinal Cord Inj Rehabil. 26(3):209-219, 2020).
