Degenerative Spine Disease and Role of Pain Medicine

The spine comprises a series of vertebrae and intervertebral discs, providing support, stability, and protection for the spinal cord. Like any other body organ, the spine is subjected to degeneration during its lifetime, which may lead to chronic neck and back pain with or without radicular pain in upper and lower limbs. Pain Medicine, an emerging super-specialty branch of modern medicine, which deals exclusively with chronic pain syndromes with ‘Minimally Invasive Pain & Spine Interventions (MIPSI), percutaneous and minimally invasive therapies, may effective deal with many these degenerative spine conditions effectively. This chapter highlights the various common degenerative conditions affecting cervical and lumber spine and their minimally invasive treatment options in Pain Medicine.
