Spinal disc disease can cause both cervical and lumbar pain. Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is defined as the gradual deterioration of the intervertebral discs. Intervertebral discs (IVDs) are like a cushion between the vertebrae in the spine. With degeneration, the disc loses its ability to function effectively causing pain, reduced mobility, and other complications. The term “disease” is thus a misnomer, and it results from the natural aging process and can be exacerbated by factors such as injury, genetics, and lifestyle choices. It may manifest as pain, decreased mobility, and other neurological symptoms. Most of the patients (up to 80%) get relief with non-surgical treatments like lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, medications, and injections to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Innovations include biologic-based treatment strategies that act as alternatives to surgery.
