From Followers to Trendsetters: Ability of the Firms to Counter Disruptive Innovations, Business Turbulence and Emerge as Industry Trendsetters
摘要
Disruptive innovations cause business turbulence and disrupt existing businesses. Incumbents increase the firm’s ability to survive the disruption. Few firms could go further to introduce disruptive innovation and become Industry Trendsetters successfully. Understanding the research trends and outcomes in these areas would provide crucial inputs to industry practitioners and add to the body of knowledge. This study establishes the publication trends in this domain by analysing 136 documents from the Scopus database using the SPAR-4-SLR process. Additionally, thematic analysis helps identify central themes as the outcome of the research articles and suggests future research topics. The study of research trends establishes that 1998–2007 was a dormant decade, 2002–2006 was a latent trend, 2008–2015 was an awakening decade, and the boom period from 2016 to 2023, and potentially 2024 and 2025 could be plateau years. The central five themes that emerged through thematic analysis are artificial intelligence and the innovation dilemma as a disruption, innovative strategies and ambidexterity, radical and disruptive innovation, business turbulence, and its role in entrepreneurship creating hurdles to organisational agility. The identified future research avenues are AI-driven decision-making and its importance in the uncertain environment, how disruptive innovation transforms the performance of the firm and survival, the organisation’s ambidexterity role in the disruptions and how to foster innovation, the firm’s ability to counter disruptive innovation through innovation management framework, and how to promote organisational agility in entrepreneurs to manage business turbulence effectively.
