The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include a broad spectrum of global challenges, ranging from poverty eradication and reducing inequalities to addressing climate change, ensuring access to clean energy, promoting responsible consumer behaviour and establishing sustainable practices in terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Microorganisms, with their remarkable adaptability and growth capabilities in diverse environments, have emerged as important components for addressing these social concerns and directly contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. Primarily, the pathogenic abilities of microorganisms have been the focus for many centuries; however, it is essential to recognise the vast array of beneficial roles that microbes play in the sustainability of the planet. Therefore, a comprehensive and scientific exploration of the microbial domain is necessary, as it holds the potential to significantly contribute to the attainment of many SDGs. This chapter provides a comprehensive understanding of the capabilities of microorganisms and recommends innovative solutions for global challenges such as bioenergy production, bioremediation of polluted ecosystems, sustainable agriculture and promoting ecosystems. The objective of this chapter is to investigate the intricate interactions of microbial communities in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, which are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity. Further, the role of microbes in nutrient cycling, soil health and carbon sequestration is highlighted. Harnessing the unique metabolic capabilities of microorganisms can lead to the development of sustainable agricultural practices that rely on reduced chemical inputs, improved nutrient uptake and enhanced crop resilience to environmental stresses for a transition to a circular and sustainable economy.
