On September 9, 2018, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as North Korea) celebrated its 70th anniversary of its founding. This surpasses the lifespan of the Soviet Union, which lasted 69 years. Since its founding in 1948, North Korea has overcome numerous crises, such as the Korean WarKorean War in the 1950s and the unprecedented economic hardship known as the “Arduous March” in the 1990s, under the regimes of Kim Il SungKim Il Sung, Kim Jong IlKim Jong Il, and Kim Jong UnKim Jong Un, spanning three generations of succession (Isozaki, Kiyō Kokusai Jōsei. 90:57–68, 2020a). During this period, the three generations of regimes have demonstrated strong continuity in aspects such as the strengthening of the supreme leader's power, and the construction of “socialism”. Therefore, examining the origins of this regime is crucial for understanding the subsequent North Korean regime.

On September 9, 2018, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as North Korea) celebrated its 70th anniversary of its founding.
