Does Formal Business Education Contribute to Pro-environmental Behaviors in Students? A Cross-Country Literature Review and Proposal of a Conceptual Framework

Education plays a crucial role in promoting social impact among students around the world. However, the effectiveness of the formal Business education system in fulfilling this international purpose needs to be examined. This directs us to the question, ‘Does formal Business education contribute to Pro-environmental behaviors in students?’ The objective of this chapter is to investigate the extent to which the Business education curriculum is contributing to pro-environmental behaviors in students across the world. The key variables of this study include student curriculum design, competencies and skills, the role of teachers in delivering pedagogies and students’ intrinsic motivation toward environmental consciousness. A cross-country literature review was conducted, focusing on the best practices from countries such as India, Pakistan, China, Japan and the United States. This provides an international outlook on the topic. The outcome of this study will raise academic standards in Business education, incorporating or amending ways to socially engage students and internationalization of curriculum development in Business education. This literature review utilized content analysis, encompassing diverse sources like journal articles, reports, books and conference proceedings from databases like SCOPUS and Google Scholar. It emphasized key terms and cross-country comparisons while primarily selecting articles from reputable publishers such as Elsevier, Emerald, Sage, Springer, Taylor and Francis and Wiley. Using the derived an information, a conceptual framework was designed. The conceptual framework will be the future scope of research. The findings and social implications of this study are significant and international in its applicability, as it provides recommendations to curriculum enhancements in Business education, the need for targeted teacher training in delivering the program, student behavior enhancement initiatives that directly impact the increased pro-environmental behaviors of students. At a much-focused level, the insights from this study can help to probe, ways Business education can be internationalized.
