Compression Strength Parallel to the Grain of Yellow Meranti (Shorea Faguetiana) Timber

The compression strength parallel to the grain that is used for the design of compression members of a truss structure or column as a part of the building, depending on the characteristics of wood species. Some wood codes include tables of information on quality grades and mechanical properties of wood, but for more accurate design, compression testing is still needed to obtain empirical data on compressive strength for structural design purposes. The aim of this research is to conduct experimental research to obtain data on the compressive strength of yellow Meranti (Shorea faguetiana) parallel to the grain. The scope of the research is yellow Meranti (Shorea faguetiana) timber in dry conditions with a moisture content of 12%. Testing was carried out using a Universal Testing Machine, a compression test method parallel to the grain according to ASTM D143. The test objects were made by referring to the ASTM D143 primary method. The number of test objects is 30 specimens. The parameters studied are compression stress at proportional (yield) load and at ultimate load. This stress-strain model can provide benefits in designing a compressive structural member of the truss system and column member of the frame system, which are the compression strength parameters of yellow Meranti timber, which are widely used in several countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
