Air pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing concerns facing humanity today. Specifically, particulate matter (PM) endangers human health, and harms ecosystems. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) has the ability to reduce PM without being contaminated and can still continuously grow normally. Meanwhile, the primary raw materials of concrete, such as cement and sand, are gradually depleting over time due to excessive utilization thus demanding alternatives. This paper proposed the utilization of the green wall system constructed from Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), featuring sweet potato plants, as a sustainable alternative to cement mortar used in plastering walls adjacent to roadways. After systematic investigations, the researchers came up with the designed thickness, width, and depth equal to 100 mm, 500 mm, and 500 mm respectively for each panel. The installation methodology utilized is a modular wall system to ensure quick assembly and easy disassembly. Using the principles of Mechanics, the three 2.0″ long self-drilling black screws to connect each supporting element onto the wall were proven to have sufficient capacity against critical shear, tension, and combined. The designed supporting elements made of 2.0″ × 1.0″ × 0.6 mm galvanized metal furring were also proven to have sufficient capacity to withstand significant seismic and wind effects conforming to the standards of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP). In conclusion, the design of the proposed green wall system is suitable for its designated functions.
